Sustainable Development of the Coconut Industry

Along with the increasing trend of coconut product consumption, in recent times, several enterprises have invested in modern factories and collaborated with farmers to organize raw material areas to create deeply processed products for export to various countries. However, the coconut industry still needs an overall strategy and appropriate planning to ensure long-term development, bringing benefits to both farmers and processing enterprises.

The Vinacoco nata de coco factory of G.C Food Joint Stock Company (GC Food) was established in 2016 and is currently the largest and most modern nata de coco processing and supply facility in Vietnam. The factory is built on an area of 11,000 m2 in Ho Nai Industrial Park, Trang Bom District, Dong Nai Province, with a processing capacity of 20,000 tons of nata de coco per year. Vinacoco's nata de coco products are supplied to leading F&B businesses in Vietnam and exported to 20 countries worldwide, including demanding markets such as Japan, Korea, and the EU.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of G.C Food Joint Stock Company, said that every year, Vinacoco can consume about 6 million liters of coconut water, equivalent to purchasing coconuts from about 250 hectares of raw material areas in Ben Tre. Research results have shown the mass ratio of processed coconut products per 1,000 coconuts yields 378 kg of white coconut meat, 270 liters of coconut water, 200 kg of coconut shell, 1,000 coconut husks, and 48 kg of brown shell fiber.

Among these, Vinacoco uses coconut water to process nata de coco. Enterprises cooperating with Vinacoco will carry out deep processing from coconut meat and other parts. Thanks to deep processing, the value of coconuts has increased many times, helping stabilize the livelihood of people living off coconut farming and creating jobs for local workers, contributing to stabilizing the rural ecosystem and combating climate change.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thu, the global demand for nata de coco is currently very high due to the many values this product brings. Therefore, Vinacoco is planning to double its capacity to serve export orders in 2024-2025, mainly to markets such as Korea, Japan, Thailand, and China.
